African Americans rule the game of basketball today. By the late 1980's African Americans were really starting to dominate the pro league. Each year, the competition would get harder and harder. Just sixty-three years ago, in 1950, there were only two black players in the NBA out of about 500 athletes. According to statistics, however, in 2011, eighty-three percent of the NBA athletes were non-white players, leaving only seventeen percent of them white! The game today is only getting tougher each year, with the percentage of whites actually decreasing! In fact, thirty-four percent of white athletes who were interviewed said, "African-American players have become so dominant in sports
like football and basketball that many white athletes feel they can't compete
at the same level." Due to the information given by ESPN, out of the top hundred NBA basketball players in 2012, seventy-nine of them are African Americans. In other words, seventy-nine percent of the best 100 players are black. Earl Lloyd made it possible for the NBA to make the slow change in who could play in a professional game. We thank Lloyd for everything he did for us, to make a difference in this world, and for not giving up no matter what it took to reach his goal.
